And the elephant seals flop up onto the beach,
Crush the fence beneath their weight,
And reclaim the parking lot
For life.

Meanwhile
Workers worry their lower lips,
Click and click on wilting bank accounts,
Line up at pop up food banks
Because their bosses argue
About building a fence big enough
To keep lives out.

All we have to do for the seals
Is let them be.
Stop shaking the blue tarps
And they know how to turn
Asphalt into a nursery.
